List of presidents of Sri Lanka (ශ්රී ලංකාවේ ජනාධිපතිවරුන්ගේ ලැයිස්තුව) The President of Sri Lanka is the elected head of state and the head of government. The president is a dominant political figure in Sri Lanka. The office was created in 1972, as more of a ceremonial position. It was empowered with executive powers by the 1978 Constitution introduced by J. R. Jayewardene. The current president is Gotabaya Rajapaksha, elected on November 16, 2019. 1. Raavana-1 | Sri Lanka's first research satellite, launched into space. | ශ්රී ලංකාවේ පළමු පර්යේෂණ චන්ද්රිකාව වන ‘රාවණා -1’ අභ්යවකාශයට දියත් කරන ලදී. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Raavana-1 was designed by Tharindu Dayaratne who is an Electrical and Electronics engineer of the University of Peradeniya together with Dulaani Chamikaa Vithanage who is a graduate of the Asian Technological Institute in Thailand. They built this satellite while studying space engineering at the Kyushu Institute of Technology in Japan. Kaavinda Jayawardena, Director, Communications Division of the Arthur C. Clarke Center, said the orbiting is scheduled at 3.45 pm local time. He added the general public will be able to catch a glimpse of the event live at the Arthur C. Clark Center. The Raavana One was launched on April 18th from a NASA-based Mid-Atlantic space station in Virginia, using an Antares rocket. On the 21st of April 2019 on the eve of the Easter Sunday on suicide bomb attacks on the island of Sri Lanka on the 21st of April 2019 just before the 30 years of brutal war in the hearts and minds of the people of Sri Lanka By plunging. The scandal caused nearly 253 deaths, including the deaths of Mrs. Shantha Mayadunne and her daughter, with nearly 30 foreigners and 485 others wounded. (1 St. Anthony’s Shrine A suicide blast went off at this Roman Catholic church in Kochchikade, Colombo, around 8:45 a.m. Witnesses described scenes of terror and carnage. “It was a river of blood,” said N. A. Sumanapala, a shopkeeper who works near the church. “Ash was falling like snow.” 2 Shangri-La hotel A suicide blast hit the Table One Restaurant, which was serving Easter brunch, on the hotel’s third floor just before 9 a.m. Another suicide bomb was detonated in hotel corridor. 3 Kingsbury Hotel A suicide bomb shattered windows and walls. 4 Cinnamon Grand Hotel The hotel had been blown up before, in 1984, when it was called the Hotel Lanka Oberoi. 5 Dematagoda housing complex At around 2:45 p.m., a few hours after the initial wave of bombings, a suspect who was being questioned by the police in a Colombo suburb detonated a suicide bomb, killing three officers, according to officials. Explosives were found inside, and three suspects were arrested. 6 Tropical Inn A blast occurred at this small hotel near the national zoo in Dehiwala, a suburb of Colombo later at around 2 p.m. 7 St. Sebastian’s Church The deadliest suicide attack hit a Roman Catholic church in Negombo, a city about 20 miles north of Colombo. Photos showed the church’s ceiling blown out and pews smashed in the middle of the church. At least 104 people were killed. 8 Bandaranaike International Airport A pipe bomb filled with about 110 pounds of explosives was discovered near the airport and defused by the Sri Lankan Air Force. 9 Zion Church At least 28 people were killed when a suicide bomb hit this church in the eastern city of Batticaloa.) Condemning that incident, local and foreign parishioners and people had issued condolences around the world, and expressed their condolences in many ways. Also, a number of religious rituals took place around the world. The services rendered by the tri forces, police and doctors as valued deities on the earth were of great value when the whole world accused the responsible authorities of having the terrorist attack. At the same time, many of the suspects and agents responsible for the terrorist attack were arrested through raids and search operations conducted island-wide with weapons. Also, our doctors, including the hospitals, were able to save many lives of serious casualties. It is also important to appreciate how the humanity of Sri Lanka once again demonstrated the support of the people at various times. We are all for them offer salute through AHID TV NETWORK.
